Arrest made after accident kills mother who was visiting newborns

A 37-year-old woman in California gave birth to twin babies, who were born prematurely. They were put in the NICU at a hospital near her home, and she would drive to the hospital to visit them. They were her fifth and sixth children.

One night, she was driving back from that visit. About a mile from her house and her other four children, a car crossed the center line ahead of her and slammed into her vehicle. She was killed in the accident.

A 21-year-old woman was behind the wheel of that second car. She has now been arrested. Reports claim that she was drunk at the time of the crash, with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.21. With the legal limit set at 0.08, that's almost three times as much alcohol as she was legally allowed to drink.

Officers did not arrest her right away. Instead, she was brought to a hospital. More extensive toxicology tests were being done, and they wanted to have those results in hand before they arrested her. That said, they claimed they discovered alcohol in her car after the accident, so they suspected all along that she'd been under the influence.

The twin girls were eight weeks old. The family has been raising support in the wake of the crash, and they said the girl's mother would go see them every day.

A crash like this is tragic and leaves the family with many medical bills and related costs. While financial compensation may not make up for the emotional loss, it can help with the monetary burden during this hard time, so it's important for family members to know what legal rights they have.
