7th-grade student dies after being hit by an SUV on his bike

A 7th-grade student and his sister were headed home from school, riding their bikes in Long Beach, when they were hit by an SUV. The boy's sister was hurt, and he was tragically killed.

The crash happened right before 4:00 p.m. Police reports indicate that the two kids were crossing the road at the intersection where Woodruff Avenue and Conant Street come together, and they were in the crosswalk.

At the same time, a 2001 Chevy Suburban was attempting to make a left turn. It drove through the crosswalk and hit the two kids.

Emergency crews rushed them both to the hospital. The girl's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, and her condition is stable. The boy, however, passed away at the medical center.

Police did say that the light was green, and they also said that the driver of the SUV stayed at the crash site and has been cooperating as they carry out their official investigation. The light was also green for the kids in the crosswalk, police noted. Had the vehicle been going straight instead of turning at the time, the accident never would have happened.

Other students from the school paid tribute by placing flowers near the intersection and writing messages on a poster. They described the boy as a class clown who always enjoyed making people laugh.

It's heart-wrenching for a family when a child is killed in a bicycle accident. While financial compensation cannot take away the emotional impact, it's still important to consider for things like medical bills, funeral costs and more.
