10 tips for pedestrian safety

Pedestrian accidents can be devastating and carry a high degree of risk of turning fatal. Even at low speeds, pedestrians are incredibly vulnerable.

So, while drivers do have an obligation to avoid pedestrians and drive safely, it's also important for people to know what they can do to protect themselves. Here are 10 tips that can help:

  1. Don't walk alone. Being in a group makes you more visible.
  2. Wear clothes that have reflective fabric or at least bright colors, especially at night.
  3. Don't look down at your cellphone. Always keep your head up and stay alert.
  4. Use walking paths and designated areas for pedestrians when possible.
  5. Don't just look left and then right if you're going to cross the road. Look back to the left one last time. A speeding driver could close the distance when you think it's safe.
  6. Use the crosswalks. Even if you have to go out of your way, they keep you safe.
  7. Adults: Always cross with young kids. Do not let them by the road alone.
  8. Leave the headphones at home so you can hear traffic.
  9. Make eye contact, even if a driver is stopped and appears to be waiting for you.
  10. Never assume anything. Just because you think a car should stop does not mean that it is going to stop.

Again, this doesn't mean that drivers are absolved of guilt. When they drive recklessly and negligently, all the safety tips in the world may not help, and that's when those who are hit need to know their legal rights to compensation for medical bills and more.
