The holidays increase the risk for drunk and buzzed drivers

People often argue that they were only buzzed if they get caught driving after they've been drinking. For other drivers on the road, though, the risk is clear: Drunk and buzzed drivers can increase the odds of an accident that results in serious injury or death. It's really that simple.

It's also something that's very important to keep in mind through the holidays. People have parties. They go out with friends. They have time off from work. Overall, they're more likely to have even a small amount to drink. The holidays also involve a lot of travel. The two don't mix, putting more and more drunk or buzzed drivers on the road.

The statistics always paint a bleak picture. For instance, in 2015, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that 29 percent of the 35,092 car accident fatalities were linked to drunk driving. That's 10,265 deaths. In December alone, 840 people died in these accidents. Between 2011 and 2015, a full 3,983 people died in DUI crashes.

The holidays can be a lot of fun. This isn't to tell you not to go out with friends and family members, not to enjoy yourself or not to go to those holiday parties. You just need to know the risks when you do it. They rise every holiday season, and fun and excitement can quickly turn to regret and high hospital bills.

Even if you stay sober behind the wheel, the risk is still there. If you want to learn more about your legal options after being hit by a drunk driver, our website offers a lot of helpful information.
