Could one app reduce Super Bowl drunk driving?

When the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots meet in the Super Bowl, fans from the east coast to the west coast will flock to bars and restaurants for Super Bowl parties. It's basically a holiday in the United States, with plenty of eating and drinking that often starts long before kickoff.

The unfortunate side effect of this celebration is that it can result in increased incidents of drunk driving. People want to celebrate and watch the game, but they still have to get home after four hours or more of drinking with their friends.

Police are planning to respond in California. They're going to put more officers on patrol, and they will use checkpoints to identify potential drunk drivers. They hope this can cut back on DUI accidents and injuries.

One thing that they're recommending is that people download a free mobile app called Designated Driver VIP. It can help even those who aren't DDs by connecting them with services like Uber, but its main function is to tell designated drivers which bars and other establishments are having specials aimed at them. This could include free appetizers, for instance, or free drinks that don't contain alcohol.

This way, the designated driver doesn't have to feel left out. It provides an incentive for people who are willing to stay sober and help others get home safely.

The app certainly may help to cut back on drinking and driving, as will the patrols and checkpoints. However, nothing will fully eliminate that risk on Super Bowl Sunday. It's important for those who are injured in accidents to know what legal options they have.
