Drunk driving crash leads to murder charges

A man was allegedly drunk behind the wheel when, driving at about 86 mph, he blew through a red light. His vehicle plowed into another car at the intersection, injuring one person and killing three more.

The group riding in the second car at 3a.m., appeared to be friends from college. One was currently a student at the University of California Irvine, while two more had graduated from the university.

Two of the young people died at the crash site. A third was rushed to a nearby medical center, but he then died a few days later from his injuries. The fourth was also hospitalized and, though that person lived, doctors found a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and had to put the fourth student into a medically induced coma.

The alleged drunk driver was a man from Rialto who had already been given a DUI conviction in the past. At that time, he was told that being involved in a deadly DUI accident after the conviction could bring about murder chargers. Since he did so anyway, he is now being charged with three counts of DUI murder and his bail was set at $2 million. Other charges he faces include having a BAC (blood alcohol concentration) that was greater than .08 while causing great bodily injury.

A conviction on the current charges carries a maximum sentence that ranges from 51 years to life behind bars.

Medical costs after serious injuries can be astronomical, especially with funeral costs added in. It's very important for family members to know what legal options they may have to seek financial compensation.
