1 bicyclist killed, 1 injured during Tour de Palm Springs event

Bicyclists participating in the Tour de Palm Springs were taken off-guard by a catastrophic motor vehicle collision involving two bicyclists and a motorist traveling at approximately 100 mph on a recent Saturday. One of the bicyclists did not survive the collision, while the other cyclist required emergency hospital care.

According to a California Highway Patrol officer, the motorist was driving his vehicle in a reckless manner along Dillon Road at the time of the collision. The bicycle tour had already begun and, according to police, the driver should have known that he was driving on the road with multiple cyclists and needed to be on the lookout for them. "A reasonable person would understand there was an event going on," the officer said.

Furthermore, police have conducted sufficient investigations to rule out the influence of drugs or alcohol playing a role in the collision. The 21-year-old driver, was operating a Ford 500 at the time of the crash, heading eastbound along Dillon Road, where the speed limit was posted to be 50 mph. Before the fatal collision, he drove onto the northside shoulder of the road. Then, he lost control and drove into the eastbound lanes and struck the two cyclists, who were traveling in an eastward direction.

One of the cyclists, a 49-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the accident site. The other cyclist, a Huntington Beach woman of unknown age, suffered serious injuries and needed airlifting to Palm Springs, where she received care at Desert Regional Medical Center. The 21-year-old driver survived with a laceration to his head. Police have since arrested him for suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.

Injured victims of car crashes, and family members of deceased victims, should always investigate the facts surrounding the accidents closely. An in-depth understanding of the injuries, deaths and events involved in the crash -- in addition to an understanding of California law -- could help victims evaluate their potential claims for financial compensation relating to the incidents.
