25 percent of deadly accident victims are not in cars

When you think of fatal accidents, you probably think of wrong-way drivers, head-on collisions, people running red lights and hitting other cars in the intersection and other similar accidents.

You're not wrong. These types of accidents happen frequently, and they can't be ignored. However, it's worth noting that around 25 percent of those who are killed in car accidents aren't in cars at all. They're pedestrians.

That statistic comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety, and it's just for Orange County. If you look at the fatality statistics from the National High Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), you'll find that about 12 pedestrians lose their lives every single day in the United States. That is based off of the 2013 total, when 4,735 pedestrians passed away.

Injuries are also very common. The NHTSA notes that 2013 saw roughly 69,000 pedestrian injuries over the course of the year. That number is a bit big to digest, so look at it this way: Every eight minutes, a pedestrian was hurt by a motor vehicle. Every eight minutes.

Pedestrian accidents really are something you don't think about until it happens to you. It's very easy to feel safe in a crosswalk, even though you're only protected by two thin lines of paint on the pavement. It's easy to feel safe on the sidewalk, but there's often nothing between you and traffic. One little mistake is all that it takes.

If this happens to you, it's critical that you know your potential rights to financial compensation. Pedestrian accidents can leave you with catastrophic injuries, high medical bills, lost wages and much more.
