How can I avoid a car accident while running?

Getting out in the fresh air for a jog is not only fun, but it's great for your health. The only problem -- and it's a very serious problem at that -- is the fact that going for a run exposes you to the risks of getting hit by a car. These kinds of vehicle versus pedestrian crashes often result in catastrophic injuries and death. So, what can you do to avoid getting hit by a car while going for a jog?

Get to know your running routine

Take safe and easy-to-navigate roads where you know what to expect. If there's an area where traffic is particularly erratic, you'll know to keep your eyes open the more you gain experience with a particular running route.

Keep your eyes peeled

It seems obvious, but you need to keep your eyes open and stay alert every second of your run. When you're more alert, there's less of a chance that you'll get caught unawares by a vehicle that surprises you. With this in mind, you can increase your awareness by refraining from using headphones.

Run against the traffic

Always face the traffic when you're running. Just like walkers are advised to walk against traffic, so they can see oncoming vehicles and avoid getting hit if a driver loses control, runners need to do the same.

Be careful at stop signs and traffic lights

Just because the light is red or just because there's a stop sign doesn't mean that the driver is going to stop, and it doesn't mean the driver will see you when making a left turn. Be watchful and careful and don't step out in front of a car expecting the driver to follow the rules of the road.

These are just a few ideas that will help you stay safe when going for a jog. If you still get hit and injured in spite of your efforts to be attentive and stay safe, you may want to investigate whether California personal injury law would support a claim for financial damages.
