Driving while distracted

California drivers who engage in any activity that diverts their attention from the road are referred to as distracted drivers. Texting or talking on the phone, conversing with other people in the vehicle, adjusting the navigation systems or radio are all activities that can draw a person's full attention from the road and his or her driving.

Texting while driving can be particularly hazardous. In order to send or read a text message, a driver has to look away from the road for 5 seconds. If his or her vehicle is traveling at 55 miles per hour, that person will drive the length of a whole football field before returning his or her gaze to the road.

People are not able to drive safely if they do not give driving their complete attention. Any type of behavior in which they engage while driving can be a distraction and increase the chances that a crash will occur.

For 2015, the death toll for people who were killed due to distracted driving was 3,477. Additionally, 391,000 people sustained injuries in crashes caused by distracted drivers.

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration is using the national stage to combat distracted driving. It partners with local and state law enforcement entities to implement distracted driving laws to keep the roads safe. The agency also issues public service announcement and conducts campaigns to advise people that in order to drive safely, they will have to drive with no distractions.

Personal injury attorneys may help people who have been injured in motor vehicle accidents caused by distracted drivers pursue financial compensation. Investigations involving accident reconstructions may be conducted to verify the negligent parties. The responsible parties may be held financially liable for victims' injuries that result in rehabilitation, lost wages, medical expenses, pain and suffering or permanent disability.
